Compass: Rules

GENERAL RULES:

1. A line dance is deemed where all participants perform the same set of steps in a repeated pattern, with all dancers moving on the same foot, in the same direction, at the same time.
2. Entrants must perform two (2) rotations (vanilla's) of the choreographed dance or sequence, ie; if you choreograph your own routine you must repeat it at least once. A variation is a deviation from the original choreography and is permitted in any routine.
3. Formation changes are permitted in all trio & group routines & may commence from the beginning of the routine. The "vanilla" rule however still applies to the dance sequence, as does rule 1.
4. The dance time is limited to a maximum of four (4) minutes & thirty (30) seconds & a minimum of two (2) minutes & thirty (30) seconds. An exception to this is the freestyle section with a maximum of five (5) minutes.
5.
Music may be from any category eg. country, country rock/pop, contemporary.
6. A competitor must not dance more than once in each section.
7. Except in the musical introduction & the end of the routine, no mirror image or contra dancing is allowed. The exception to this is the freestyle section.
8. The entry & exit of competitors will be judged as part of the routine. (ie you will be judged from the moment you step on the floor to the moment you exit the floor).
9. Each competitor's competition experience must fit the section entered. Any Novice 1 or Novice 2 entrant may dance up to the Improver sections, provided their dance partner(s) correctly fits the section criteria. No entrants are permitted to dance down.
10. Provocative clothing is not permitted nor is the use of obscene or overly suggestive body movements.
11. Hat & skirt work is encouraged & if included will be judged, however the emphasis will remain on the dance & footwork.
12. No props allowed. A prop is a defined as anything that is not part of your original outfit when the routine begins.
13. Competitors must not restart a dance after a breakdown unless directed by the Judges & Event Directors.
14. Competitors must provide their own music which is to be clearly marked (club name, section number, entrant number & track number). A competitor with special needs (eg. hearing impairment) must indicate this information on the CD cover sheet.
15. Competitors must have at least one (1) backup CD of their music to be used during the competition. All competition music may be on the one CD, HOWEVER, each entry requires a separate CD per section.
16. Splicing of music is allowed, however a back up copy is required. Competitors using spliced music should indicate this clearly on the CD cover sheet.
17. Music must be presented to the sound desk 30 minutes prior to each section or as directed by event organizers. Each entry must have a readily accessible back-up copy of their music.
18. The appropriate entry fees must accompany all entries and must be paid in full prior to the competition. No one will be permitted to compete until they have paid their entry fees.
19. All entries must be received by the close of business (5.30pm) on Friday 15th August 2008. All entries must be on the official entry form, which may be photocopied if necessary.
20. The judging criteria will be from a total tally of 50 points:
* Degree of difficulty 1-10 points (includes hat & skirt work)
* Floorcraft 1-10 points (includes entry & exit)
* Unity of dancers 1-15 points
* Technique of dancers 1- 15 points.
21. The final points tally for first, second & third will be announced.

23. Competitors must dance in programme order unless otherwise arranged with the Event Directors Cynthia Rennolds & Jenny Leigh.
24. The Head Judge's decision in consultation with the Event Directors will be final & no correspondence will be entered into.
25. All ages are determined as at the competition date.
